Running a Cloud Switcher: A Lot for TDs to Like
I came to BitFire not long ago as a technical director with years of experience sitting behind a physical panel calling the shots on sports, news, and studio productions. So, stepping into a role where I’d be working with a cloud-based switcher was a shift. But now, with a few productions under my belt and a far better understanding of what cloud-based tools can do, I can confidently say that cloud switching is not just doable but powerful.
Still a Switcher, but in the Cloud
At its core, the switcher inside the BitFire Platform does what you’d expect: builds and animates effects, plays out clips and graphics, takes sources to air. What’s different is how and where you do it. No need to ship a switcher or roll a truck. You fire it up in a browser, build your show, and take it live from your bedroom, your basement, wherever you’ve got a decent internet connection.
I’ve done it. First week on the job, I ran a lacrosse red-zone–style production with multiview windows and custom effects, all from home — just me as TD with a laptop.
Building for Real Shows and Real People
The first show I ran, I used a Stream Deck with macros built in Companion. It wasn’t how most TDs are used to working, but it got the job done. The next time, I made it a point to use a traditional panel too, because I know a lot of operators want that tactile feel. The truth is, the system supports both. You can go all-virtual, all-hardware, or somewhere in between.
The flexibility is great, but what’s more important is a familiar feel. That’s been a big focus for me in my new role here at BitFire: helping bridge the gap between legacy switchers and this new cloud-native environment. Whether you’ve spent years on a Carbonite or you’re used to building macros in Dashboard, there’s a way to map that muscle memory into BitFire’s switcher environment.
Real Talk: What’s Coming Next
Requests from users are shaping the development roadmap and creating an ever-more-robust production platform. Users already have the space and ability to produce multiple shows and events from within one environment, or to create different environments for different use cases. To make things easier for clients with multiple environments and to reduce build time, we’re now looking at making it possible for users to export memories from one environment and upload them to another. One of the great things about our platform is that once the environment and effects are built, they remain available for as long as they are needed.
Another future feature is chroma keying. If you’re doing weather or any green-screen–based content, it’s not there today. But it will be soon because the development team has listened and is working on it. I appreciate that I can give the team direct feedback, and updates roll out quickly. One week we’re talking about a key duration setting; the next week, it’s live.
Gaining Speed, Scale, and Sanity
What really sold me on the BitFire cloud switcher is how much more control I have over my environment. If I think of a better way to build an effect or change a layout midweek, I can open up the platform, make the tweak from home, and close it back down. No driving into work. No waiting for access.
Beyond convenience, it’s about scale. Operators can work multiple shows in a weekend without hopping flights. Clients can spin up productions with whatever configuration fits their budget, be it a big panel, small panel, or none at all. And if someone gets sick or can’t make it to a show, you can drop a replacement TD into the environment instantly.
For Anyone Who’s Skeptical
If you’re reading this as a seasoned TD and wondering if this cloud thing is worth learning, I get it. I was right there. But I’d encourage you to try it. Because once you do, you’ll see the potential. I think you’ll find that you’re not giving up quality. Rather, you’re gaining options, and they’re options that can make your productions more efficient, your team more nimble, and your day a lot less chaotic.
From a client perspective, the benefit is clear: consistent quality, no matter where the team is located. Operators can be remote, graphics and clip playback are tightly integrated, and the whole thing runs on BitFire’s rock-solid transmission backbone. Along with a cloud switcher, you’re getting a full production pipeline.
The Bottom Line
Production with cloud tools is already a reality, with high-profile success stories. We’ve run real shows, real games, with real results. And we’re using operator feedback to improve the platform every day.
I used to be a guy behind a traditional switcher. Now I’m building shows from my home office and helping others do the same. I love the convenience, control, and flexibility. But don’t take my word for it. Take a few minutes to sign up at BitFire.tv and try out cloud switching yourself!
